For nearly a decade, DenverStiffs.com has been the place for the best and most complete Denver Nuggets coverage on the web. More than just a blog, we take pride in the fact that our site is a place for fans to meet, hang out, and discuss their favorite team.
As we continue to expand our coverage of the Nuggets, we will be looking to add a few new writers and contributors as well as a social media coordinator. While I will have input on the process, SB Nation handles all new inquiries so be sure to apply using the links below. These positions are unpaid and should be thought of as a passion project. 6/15/2017 - Leverage? Or something else? In his column about the Los Angeles Clippers’ hiring of Jerry West, Los Angeles Times columnist Broderick Turner has a juicy tidbit about Chris Paul’s plans to meet with teams in free agency.
Paul also has plans to talk with the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets, one executive said.
So this is a bit of surprise. Like last year’s courtship of Dwyane Wade, the Denver Nuggets are a bit of a strange name on the list of teams Paul would even be interested in. Paul is in the prime of his career and the Nuggets are an up and coming team but probably more than a piece or two away from contending for an NBA championship. It’s likely that Paul wouldn’t consider the Nuggets unless he felt there was a good chance they’d be adding multiple pieces this off-season.
The Nuggets also have a pair of young point guards in Jamal Murray and Emmanuel Mudiay as well as one veteran in Jameer Nelson. Paul is clearly better than all of those players at this stage and, similar to Collapse

Strengths
Physical Profile
Looking at Justin Patton, I think of Karl-Anthony Towns from a physical perspective. Gifted with the athleticism to run around less athletic bigs and jump over everybody, Patton will be a player who uses his combination of length, strength, speed, and bounce to impact the game. He has a 7’3 wingspan and a 9’3.5 standing reach, so he’s well equipped to be a dominant center in the NBA from a physical perspective.
Efficiency around the rim, lob threat
Combined with his athleticism, Patton also has a solid feel for where to be around the rim. He had a multitude of dunks last year that occurred because of his “lob positioning” near the Collapse

Versatility
Tatum projects to be a versatile player on both ends of the court. On offense, he’s as comfortable in the low and mid post as he is out on the wing. He’s also got the ability to play the role of isolation scorer or playmaking facilitator although the latter can and should improve over time. Defensively, his length allows him to help further than most and still close out on shooters. He moves his feet like a guard on defense and has shown that he can be an interchangeable piece of a broader team defensive scheme. He probably isn’t going to be a team’s lockdown defender, but he will be a nice team defender and reliable individual defensive presence.

6/13/2017 - In a community effort, the 30 NBA teams were represented by 30 managers, with the ability to make trades on top of making draft picks. In nearly every mock draft published in anticipation of the NBA draft, the author will make 30 to 60 selections based off their professional opinion.
However, in this mock draft, I enlisted 30 general managers to help with the mock draft. I gave up control, letting them make trades to either strengthen their team or blow it up for a rebuild. They made their selections, and hopefully this gives a more general consensus on which teams want which players.

As Woj’s tweet indicates, this move brings D’Alessandro back to the basketball side of operations. From 2010-2012 D’Alessandro served as the Advisor to the Executive VP of Basketball Operations and from 2012-2013 as the VP of Basketball Operations for the Nuggets under Masai Ujiri. In 2013, he was then hired as General Manager for the Sacramento Kings before returning to Denver as a senior vice president of business and team operations in 2015. Though his time in Sacramento was ultimately marred by questionable decision making and dysfunctional teams, D’Alessandro is well known around the league Collapse

This is a loaded question, but the brunt of it is answered through three key ideas:
Drafting the best offensive player available is easy to explain to owners, season ticket holders, and fair weather fans.
The top offensive players are generally viewed as scheme changers and franchise altering players. The top defensive players are not.
It’s viewed as easier for a single offensive player to affect the game positively, while quality defensive play involves commitment from all five players.

The media portion of the workouts is very short, but in general there is a quick display of shooting prowess followed by an impromptu dunk contest followed by a round of interviews for each player. The highlight of today’s workout was Terrance Ferguson who is the one player projected to be drafted in the first round. Ferguson is also the most athletic of the bunch, making him the star of the aforementioned dunking display.

With much fanfare, the NBA has released the schedule for the 2017 NBA Las Vegas Summer League where of course the Denver Nuggets are participants. The Nuggets will help kick off opening Day when they face the Houston Rockets. Their full Summer League Schedule is as follows.

This year’s summer league promises to be an exicting one for Denver. Malik Beasley and Juancho Hernangomez are both expected to play and there’s a chance we’ll get to see draft and stash prospects Nikola Radicevic and Petr Cornelie as well. Plus don’t forget that as of right now the Nuggets have three picks in next week’s draft. No telling if they end up drafting all three players but it’s in general a safe bet that whomever they select will also be on the Summer League squad (save for a guy like OG Collapse

6/14/2017 - The Nuggets strike back According to Adrian Wojnarowski with The Vertical, the Denver Nuggets will promote Tim Connelly to President of Basketball Operations and Arturus Karnisovas to General Manager.
Karnisovas was a finalist for the open Milwaukee Bucks general manager position and Connelly was recently given an extension in his current position of Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. The promotion, as Woj indicates, is a clear preemptive move to keep the Nuggets from losing one of their most talented executives and he is reporting Karnisovas has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Bucks job. Details were not made immediately clear as to how these promotions will change the day to day responsibilities of both Connelly and Karnisovas.
The Nuggets have carried the stigma in the past as a team that has tight purse strings when it comes to paying executives and coaches but this move, along with Connelly’s recent extension, shows that Josh Kroenke Collapse

After bringing in a slew of players yesterday, highlighted by high flying guard Terrance Ferguson, the Denver Nuggets had more of a big man feel today with there workouts. First round prospects included center Justin Patton from Creighton University, center Jarrett Allen from University of Texas and power forward T.J. Leaf from UCLA. The Nuggets also worked in some local flavor with forward Emmanuel Omogbo from CSU.

Jonathan Isaac looks and acts like a prototypical stretch four in the NBA today. With the height and length to match up with most centers and the speed to keep up with small forwards, Isaac should settle in at power forward and make a huge impact. He has received some Kevin Durant comparisons with regard to his body type, and while he isn’t that long, he will use his tools on both ends to impact the entire length of the floor.

Athleticism
The number one thing that stands out about Ferguson’s game is his athleticism. He’s got legitimate ups with a 38” max vertical and treated fans in Australia to more than one highlight reel throwdown. Ferguson’s speed and leaping ability make him an effective weapon in transition with plenty of ability to finish above the rim. He also can use his athleticism to be an effective slasher, able to receive the ball up high on alley-oop passes and finish in traffic.
Length
Standing at 6’7” tall with a wingspan of over 6’8”, Ferguson has excellent length for a shooting guard. His wirey frame is a big part of his aforementioned ability to finish at the rim, but also gives him an advantage on defense. While he’s yet to prove that he can Collapse

Statistically speaking that is. Curry will be 30 this next season, and no matter what he does over these next few years, he’s quite probably descending the far side of a career peak. David Berri and Rob Simmons published a paper a few years back that Berri then turned into a great column for Vice Sports about why LeBron James was about to drop off a cliff, mathematically. The nearly superhuman James has defied those odds just yet, but the curve is inevitable for every player.
Berri and Simmons culled NBA player data, and observed the effects of age on the average NBA players winshares per 48 minutes. Here’s the telling table from Berri’s article:

I got a Basketball Jones. A fairly predictable Finals was still better than no basketball at all. Now, it’s 128 days. 3072 hours until NBA basketball is played again, at least in a fashion that counts against a win-loss record. That’s a long time for a Denver Nuggets/overall hoops junkie to go without a fix, and I assume you are one, or what the hell are you doing on a Denver Nuggets blog? You’ve got a jones. Sadly, I’m not here to wean the junkies, only to tell you how you might survive the long, long summer without any regular-season basketball in the mix… Think of it as a twelve-step program, but in the end, you’re still hooked. This offseason, it’s been encouraging. We’ve had a handful of agents reach out to us and say ‘my guy would like to play with Nikola Jokic.’ I think that speaks well to our future, when guys want to play with someone it’s really encouraging.
He also talked about their strategy this summer and how they won’t overpay for role players:
We will ‘dive’ in for a couple of guys.
There’s two or three guys that we will be very aggressive with. What we don’t want to do is sign guys just to sign guys, overpay for role players. Athleticism
Jackson is an athletic freak. He didn’t participate in the combine’s athletic testing, but his speed on the court, jumping ability and slashing to the hoop are top-tier. He uses that athleticism on defense, where he’s also very gifted. Our own Ryan Blackburn rated him as the fifth-best defender in this class, and for a freshman that’s an outstanding rank. He gets his blocks via his quick leaping ability rather than excessive length, and there is no question that he is an NBA-level athlete from Day One.

Jarrett Allen is one of the most physically gifted players in this draft class. He stands 6’11” with an insane, 7’6” wingspan and a 9’2” reach. He is flat out long and lengthy with huge hands and great athleticism and mobility. Watching him workout beside Justin Patton, you could see the difference in reach and wingspan as Allen’s frame and long arms really stand out. He’s fairly fluid in the open court.
Defensive upside
Defensive upside is one of those phrases that is so popular when talking about NBA draft prospects. Like most of Allen’s strengths, it is the future potential and not the present product that is so intriguing. Allen has Collapse

In the coming week, the 2016-2017 NBA season will likely be over, and in case you’re wondering how you’ll get your basketball fix over the summer, the Big3 will be making its debut at the end of this month. If you’re not familiar, the Big3 is a 3 on 3 professional basketball league founded by Ice Cube that’s designed to bring the excitement of the NBA All-Star game every weekend for 10 weeks. Some of our favorite retired players are back in the game in a half-court style setup that encourages physicality and stiff competition.
One of the league’s teams is “3’s Company” who boasts Allen Iverson as the player-coach and co-captain. Iverson’s resume includes 11 All-Star appearances, 2 All-Star MVP awards, and 3 All-NBA first team selections among many more.
